Introduction

Gypsy and Traveller people experience significantly worse health outcomes than the general population. Yet traditional diabetes services and information have often failed to reach Gypsy and Traveller people effectively. Much of the available patient education has not been culturally appropriate or accessible, with it often being too text-heavy, in the wrong language, or lacking practical relevance.

Ahead of World Diabetes Day, this webinar explores the experiences of Gypsy and Traveller people accessing and managing diabetes care. Drawing on FFT’s research and engagement with the communities, it will explore some of the barriers people face, including health literacy, digital exclusion, financial pressures, mobility and continuity of care. The session will consider practical approaches that can help make diabetes services more accessible, inclusive and responsive.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the webinar, participants will:

  • Understand some of the health inequalities experienced by the communities in relation to diabetes.
  • Recognise the practical and social barriers that can affect diabetes diagnosis, treatment and self-management.
  • Consider how diabetes information and services can be made more accessible.
  • Explore approaches to improving communication, engagement and continuity of care.
  • Understand the importance of culturally appropriate resources and meaningful community involvement.

Who is it for?

This webinar is aimed at health professionals working in diabetes, primary care and community health, as well as public health teams, commissioners, social prescribing and link workers, and voluntary and community organisations working with Gypsy and Traveller communities.
